Last Topless Weekend: What Goes Back On After Labor Day

Last Topless Weekend: What Goes Back On After Labor Day

The last warm wind of the year does not send a calendar invite. It just shows up in your hair.

Labor Day 2026 is Monday, September 7. That weekend is the last one most Wrangler and Gladiator families leave the hardtop off on purpose. You climb in for a short drive and the sky is still there. Someone in the passenger seat reaches up without thinking. The air still feels like August, even if the evenings have already started to cool.

Monday morning is quieter. The roof is back. The wind noise is gone. You still reach for the same handle to climb in. It is still there.

This is not a rebuild. It is a seasonal switch. The top comes and goes. The easy, comfortable parts stay.

Two people and a hoist make the hardtop feel like a thoughtful two-person job instead of a driveway argument. If a TopLift has been hanging in the garage all summer, Labor Day is the morning it comes off the rafters. The hoist goes back up. The top stays on. Nobody strips the interior back to factory. The grab that got you in all summer is the grab that gets you in when it rains.

The grab that stays

Leave the handles on. Color is the fun part. Year is the careful part.

You still climb in when the first fall rain hits the new roof. Factory fabric loops still swing. A GP-Grip sits there, ready, rated to 250 lb, folding flat when you do not need it. Strong enough for the whole family. Comfortable on a wet Tuesday.

After Labor Day the roof is on, and kids still grab the handle to climb in.

Do not guess the year on the door jamb.

On a 2024+ Wrangler, GP-Grip AIR is the only roll-bar handle that keeps the straps clear of the side-curtain airbags in the padding. AIR is not Velcro-only: the top two straps loop D-rings onto the top factory screws, and the bottom two straps bolt under the roll bar. A Torx screwdriver is required. A 2024+ Gladiator uses AIR too, but only the front 2-pack — the rears stay factory bolt-on. A 4-pack has nowhere to go. From 2007 through 2023, Wrangler JK/JL and Gladiator JT use GP-Grip PRO, tool-free. PRO and Universal are not a secure fit on 2024+ airbags. Full write-up: Safety First: Choosing Airbag-Compatible Grab Handles.

You still reach up for the roll-bar handle. The sky is gone. The grab is still there.

PRO and AIR both come in 13 colors. This weekend, year is the decision. Color can wait.

Sky One-Touch power tops are a different story: the roll-bar gap is too narrow, so that setup is a headrest handle, and another post.

What you leave in for fall

The cargo cover does not have to come off just because the sky disappeared. If it is still hiding weekend bags, leave it. Fold one side, or pull the whole cover, when you need the height of the tub.

All summer that cover had the harder job: staying put at highway speed with the top off. Only Cargo Cover PRO — JL 4DR (2018+) or JK 4DR (2007–2018), and those two are not interchangeable — is the highway-speed topless cover. LITE, 2DR, and Bronco covers flap without a roof. Once the hardtop is back, LITE can do privacy under a roof. That is a quieter job. Do not assume a Wrangler cover fits a Gladiator tub. First install still means factory bolts: T50 Torx on JL, T40 on JK. After that, the quick-release anchors make on-and-off easy. The full LITE vs PRO fork lives here: How to Choose the Right Cargo Cover.

The bolts stay too. They are the hardtop bolts now.

Factory bolts want a Torx every time the roof moves. Anchor PRO (Wrangler 6-pack) swaps them for a T-handle you can run by hand, with tie-down points around the tub whether the roof is on or off. Thread is M8-1.25 × 25 mm. Snug to about 158 in-lbm — think a bike seat-post clamp, not a workout. Gladiator owners skip Anchor PRO: the T-handle is too wide for that narrow cargo-tub edge. Any-year Gladiator JT uses GP-Star, same M8 thread, lower-profile star head. Neither one belongs in a Freedom Panel latch. More on the T-handle once it is in: GPCA Anchor PRO.

A Carabiner PRO can live in the handle loop year-round. It is not year-locked and it is not a climbing piece: 200 lb static in steel or titanium, 120–150 lb in aluminum.

Monday after Labor Day, the engine is still cold and the roof is already on. You grab the handle on the way in because it is still there. The family did the seasonal switch. Nobody started over.

Gear Mentioned

Grab handles (year-locked)

Cargo (Wrangler only, JK vs JL)

Hardtop bolts / tie-downs (Jeep-locked)

  • Anchor PRO, Jeep 6-pack. Wrangler hardtop bolt replacement. M8-1.25 × 25 mm. T-handle. Shares thread with Cargo Cover D-Plates. Not for Gladiator. Notes: Anchor PRO post.
  • GP-Star. Jeep 6-pack. Required on Gladiator JT (any year). Same M8-1.25 × 25 mm thread, star head. Also used on Wrangler where a lower-profile fastener fits better.

Universal (not year-locked, not a Jeep cover)

  • Carabiner PRO. EDC clip. 200 lb static (steel/titanium) or 120–150 lb (6061 aluminum). Not climbing-rated. Clips to a GP-Grip loop, a pack, or a keyring.
